We live in a global neighborhood.
American security is inextricably linked to the security and stability of other nations. Modern technology has significantly increased the speed with which ideas, goods, finance and people flow across international borders.
This speed, while opening enormous possibilities for global collaboration, makes it easier for transnational crime such as drug trafficking and money laundering to affect Americans at home.
We also become more vulnerable to the spread of infectious disease and the activity of extremist groups who take advantage of poverty, poor governance, and lack of economic opportunity to spread their ideology.
Foreign assistance helps address today’s global security challenges.
Programs funded by U.S. foreign assistance help stabilize weak states, combat weapons proliferation and counter narcotics trafficking and crime, in addition to addressing the root causes of poverty. Diplomatic efforts such as educational and cultural exchanges and global partnerships help build international understanding and improve America’s image abroad.
