Pope, Gates and Rice Echo Impact '08 Message

Pope Benedict XVI visited the United States with a message encouraging greater U.S. engagement with the world. The Pope said the U.S. must continue its efforts to "resolve conflicts and promote progress" towards greater equality and development. His comments echoed the Center's initiative calling on the Presidential candidates to strengthen American engagement abroad through greater investment in development and diplomacy.

Also last week, Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates testified together before the House Armed Services Committee concerning the need to strengthen our non-military tools of foreign policy and national security.
